Simple Pain au Chocolat

Last year I was lucky enough to study abroad in Rome. While I was there, I spent a wonderful weekend exploring France and came upon this amazing little bakery. Isn’t it cute?

At this glorious little place, they had the best hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted in my life, and these delightful little chocolate croissants called Pain au Chocolat. I had about ten for breakfast every morning.

Sadly, in my area there aren’t many little french patisseries, so I’ve had to improvise. Here is my recipe for cheap, easy, cheater  Pain au Chocolat:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Open a sleeve of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls and lay them out unrolled on a cookie sheet. TIP: you can always line the cookie sheet with tin foil to prevent rolls from sticking and make clean up a little easier!
  3. Place your favorite chocolate morsels (or chocolate chips, thinly sliced bits of chocolate, anything) on the unrolled crescents. Gently press down on the chocolates so they don’t fall out as you roll.
  4. Roll up your croissants and pop them in the oven for 10-12 minutes.

Serve the delicious pain au chocolat warm as breakfast, desert or – in my case – 6:00pm pre-dinner.

Bon apetit, mes amis!
